I am not a professional reviewer nor do I write many reviews (this might be only my second on ), but I do want to comment on this book -- and hopefully for everybody it won't be too much more THAN a comment -- which I've read, since I firmly believe it to be a stand-out and exceptional product.
First off, there was never any doubt in my take of "Secrets of the Olympic Ceremonies," that Myles Garcia knows as much as anybody I've ever heard on this subject. And I don't say this because frankly I've never heard of anybody else claiming to be an authority. He speaks in authoritative tones, very much appears to know what he is talking about, obviously ENJOYS the subject matter, DOES have some semblance of on-the-ground credentials (having personally participated in the ceremonies), lucky coincidences, or just plain infectious excitement about the event -- all the while admitting that there could be the possibility that others might know more about this -- that makes you feel he can lead you through the journey of learning where before your knowledge could merely fill a thimble.
But it goes beyond that too, there is wit and witticism, good humor, plain hard facts, and endless amazing anecdotes that opens up an entire world of what I'll call the "other" side of the Olympics -- the part really that has little or nothing to do with the athletes or competition, excepting of course that athletes sometimes get involved by showing themselves or holding a flag or some (or are part of some) prop. I never fully understood to what degree the opening ceremonies were such a separate and autonomous part of the Olympics, replete with political haggling and positioning, production appointments, an almost obscene struggle to top or make different any number of showpieces and host-country storytelling, and of course the individual budgeting equaling the gross national product of many single countries in the world. It's all just utterly unbelievable and endlessly fascinating.
I won't go into detail about all the wonderful amazing facts that you would never have begun to imagine had you not acquired this book -- and there ARE so many -- or the experience you feel when you do discover that the opening ceremonies ("OC" in Mr. Garcia's parlance in a virtual cornucopia of Olympic-infused acronyms), but I DO want to say this I am just a regular guy who quite honestly very seldom watched the Olympics and when I did, did so as not more than an afterthought; maybe if something else was not on to watch (although I admit, I do like the luge and downhill..). As for the opening ceremonies, I never even considered it PART of the Olympics (and boy was I wrong on that). What I'm saying is that I had no specific or particular interest in any facet of the Olympics. However, I did happen to get a copy of this book because I was interested enough in perusing it and sopping up information I'd never been privy too. And guess what? I found I couldn't put it down and have since become a convert! That's about as sterling a testimonial as I think I can give. Now, in almost exactly 90 minutes from this second, the Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies begin, and you have to know I'll be watching it with more keen an eye and anticipation of wonderment and joy than a Claim Jumper chocolate creme pie being brought into my house (OK, private abstract joke with myself). But you know what I mean, really just can't wait!
Without hesitation, I unequivocally recommend the purchase or reading of this book. I'm sure it will -- and I greatly look forward to the commencement of this momentarily, forever greatly enhance the enjoyment of this unique and one-of-a-kind spectacle we call the Olympics because quite sincerely, this book is too, one-of-a-kind and a spectacle in its own right.
This book makes for a great read, and is a "must have" for anyone interested in the Olympic Games. The photos bring the text to life and add a lot to the narrative. Unfortunately, there are an equal number of "cons" as there are "pros" to this publication. This book, while entertaining, is littered with the author's clearly biased opinions and attempts at humour (though the joke about the "Antiques Road Show" in the preface is comedy gold). The editor (if it had one) did little to curb the author's pension for subjecting the reader to unsubstantiated stories that amount to little more than rumour.
The title would benefit greatly from an explanation of the research methods. Though Garcia provides the reader with extremely helpful footnotes, the bibliography is not cited in the text, as is quite easily missed. Also, one must ask how the author come to learn about these backstage stories and unused designs? Answering that question would go a long way in building the credibility of what is an otherwise enjoyable read. The text requires the reader trust Garcia's research more often than I prefer, and I think it is it this that leaves the title so open to criticism. Unfortunately, this is a subject matter that is filled with conjecture, and any real study of it has to able to withstand that automatic difficulty.
In the end, the book is a fun read and will offer insight to people who know little about the games. Unfortunately, for me, a fun read is all it is. I hope to see a few of these concerns addressed in the second edition of this book, which I'm looking forward to.
Just got the latest edition of this book (print)--which now includes sections on Vancouver and London 2012 and other new info. Love all the tidbits and gobs of trivia factoids, particularly the sections about the messed-up national anthems (and the gallery of misplaced) Olympic mascots. (The "Borat!" version of the Kazakhstan national anthem being actually played at some championships last year in the Middle East to the great dismay of the gold medallist, is 'golden.')
Had to wait a little for the new edition of the book; but it was definitely worth the wait. Learned a lot about the protocol in these ceremonies and the painstaking details involved in putting them together. The pictures are also so vivid. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it highly.
A very intersting read. Well worth it for anyone who wants to know what goes on at OLympic Games Openiong and Closing Ceremonies.
I was always intrigued by the awesome stage tricks that only Olympic ceremonies can stage. Like...how did they do that? This book more than answers those questions. It is also a treasure trove of tasty Olympic trivia and backstage anecdotes...
So I don't understand what this reviewer Sabutai is talking about? There might've been a few missed words, and some odd syntax here and there-- but NOT the "mountains..." that the negative reviewer claims. So the author got Barack spelled with an extra `r.' What of it? It's such a nitpicky and picayune comment. I also enjoyed the trivia questions sprinkled throughout the book a great deal. Further, it's also a very colorful, well laid-out and well-researched book.
It is a more than a satisfying publication. To any prospective reader/buyer do not let Sabutai's review dissuade you from enjoying what is essentially a fun book. Obviously, that reviewer is too biased in his judgment if he cannot separate the fact that Beijing putting on the most stupendous set of Ceremonies so far and its politics are two different balls of wax. It is not something the author can do anything about; nor should he have to. So what if Beijing is a communist society? Live with it; 1.3 billion people do. I say read this fact-filled book and judge it for yourself. Most of all, it was a fun read.
