Book Review-Shattered by M. LathamIn book three of the Hidden Series, Kamon’s followers have killed Nathan’s parents and everyone is worried about what is coming next. Nathan seems unaffected from the deaths and focuses on Chris. Chris is starting college at Trenton to study art. She wants to be normal and make her parents happy. However her heart isn’t completely in it but she continues.
Eventually Kamon finds her and learns her secret. He knows who her mother is thanks to Remi. So Lydia Shaw enlists Nathan’s help to keep Chris safe without her knowledge. He takes a job as a janitor to be close to her. However with the stress he is enduring, his shifting abilities are not in his control at times. He is trying to hide his lack of control from Chris and Lydia. He knows the law for shifters.
When Kamon makes a move, Nathan is the target and Chris gets caught in the middle. Nathan unintentionally breaks her wrist. Chris’ parents find out and detain him, treating him like a criminal. Once Nathan knows what he did, he knows he can no longer be with Chris. He accepts her parents’ wishes and agrees to stay away from her.
Chris starts taking things in her own hands. She withdraws from Trenton and decides making her parents happy is not more important than Nathan. She knows what she needs to do. She needs her powers and her friends in order to beat Kamon and save her family.
This book takes up where Lost left off. The confrontation with Kamon’s followers has ended and the fallout is settling. The main characters, Chris and Nathan, are trying to find their way but keep things the same. Unfortunately that isn’t possible with the drama that enters their lives.
The beginning of the book was a bit slow to get started for me. It didn’t grab my interest instantly like the other two did. However the ending made up for it.
The story of the whole series is very unique and I love the cast of characters the author created. I can’t wait for the next installment to see how things fair. If you haven’t read any from the series, I would recommend starting with the first book Hidden. I give this book a 4 out of 5.

Throughout the whole novel, I wanted so badly to love it as much as I loved the first two books, and going into it, it never even occurred to me that I might not. It was still a very good book, and I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy reading it, but I didn't fall in love with it the way I did with the other two.
I just wasn't as invested in this one. It almost felt like not as much time was spent on Shattered as with its predecessors, so a lot of things seemed underdeveloped. There were quite a few little things I noticed as off, and I think too often some parts were left unexplained in order to build suspense, but it just made things awkward.
One of the great things about having dual perspectives in a book like this one is that one narrator can know and explain something the other has no clue about, letting the reader in on some pretty great dramatic irony. But instead, the reader is left out of the loop and has to wait until it's explained to Chris.
I did love those dual perspectives, though. I really didn't expect to because it was new and kind of out of the blue minus the epilogue of Lost, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. I've always loved Nathan because he just seemed like the perfect person in general, and it was so cool to get to delve into more of his character.
But do you know what? I think in this book, I've finally realized that he's not perfect. Before now, I was only able to see him through Christine's eyes, where he could do no evil, but now I can see that while he's still "perfect" in that he's amazing, he's not perfect because he's flawless. Nathan actually has surprisingly many flaws, but seeing them didn't really make me love him any less. If anything, they made him more real of a character for me, which was such an amazing gift that this book was able to give.
I know that I started this review off really badly, and I hope that by now you can see that I never actually hated this book. It wasn't as perfect as I had imagined it would be, and I don't want to try to hide those flaws, but Shattered really did contain a lot of beautiful things. So while it may not have been as life affirming as I had hoped, I am still incredibly glad that I read it.
